Discovering Daejeon

Compared to where I live, Daejeon has so much more going on—and it’s genuinely a great place to live. But with all it offers, I was curious as to why Daejeon had earned the nickname of a "boring city." Living nearby, I decided to dive into it with a bit of affection for the area.

1. Daejeon: From "Boring City" to Destination Spot

Daejeon, once labeled as a "boring city," has seen a shift in perception recently, becoming a place more people are visiting. Two big reasons for this change are Sungsimdang bakery and the Hanwha Eagles baseball team. Nowadays, when people think of Daejeon, many think of these iconic attractions.

The Allure of Sungsimdang

Sungsimdang is Daejeon’s iconic bakery, renowned nationwide. Its famous fried soboro bread has become a must-try for visitors. Located in Daejeon’s old downtown, the bakery draws long lines not just on weekends but throughout the week. Many people even travel by KTX just for the bakery, giving a real boost to the local economy. Sungsimdang’s success has helped revitalize the old city center, turning it into a tourist hotspot.

The Passion of Hanwha Eagles

Daejeon’s professional baseball team, the Hanwha Eagles, has also helped shift the city’s image. The team has gained fervent support in recent years, with frequent sellouts at their home games during the 2024 season. Visiting fans have made it a tradition to stop by Sungsimdang before or after games, cementing both the bakery and the team as central pieces of Daejeon’s cultural revival. Together, these two local icons have made Daejeon a place people are excited to visit.

2. Why Was Daejeon Called a "Boring City"?

Daejeon earned the "boring city" label for two main reasons:

  • Lack of Cultural and Tourist Attractions: As a hub for science and technology, Daejeon has long been seen as lagging behind other cities like Seoul or Jeju when it comes to entertainment and tourist infrastructure. This led to the perception that the city didn’t have much to offer, especially for younger people.
  • Young People Moving Away: Despite housing several universities, many young graduates left Daejeon for better opportunities in Seoul or other major cities. This "brain drain" contributed to Daejeon’s image as a quieter, less vibrant place to live.

3. The Charm of Daejeon

While Daejeon may have once been labeled "boring," it is now a major hub for advanced science and a city filled with festivals that showcase its rich cultural and technological heritage.

3-1. The Heart of Advanced Science

Daejeon is home to a wealth of research institutes, universities, and high-tech industries, making it one of Korea’s leading cities for scientific innovation.

  • Daedeok Research Complex: One of the biggest reasons Daejeon is recognized as a science hub is the Daedeok Research Complex, established in the 1970s. It is the largest research and development hub in South Korea, housing over 70 national and private institutions, including KAIST and ETRI, all of which are driving scientific advancement.
  • KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology): As one of the world’s leading science and technology universities, KAIST is located in Daejeon. It conducts cutting-edge research in engineering, IT, and biotech, fostering top talent and cementing Daejeon’s reputation as a city of science.
  • ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute): ETRI is Korea’s top research institute for information and communication technologies, leading developments in 5G, AI, and semiconductors. ETRI's global impact further strengthens Daejeon’s role as a hub for advanced IT.
  • ADD (Agency for Defense Development): Daejeon is also home to ADD, the national defense research institute. It plays a key role in applying advanced science to military technology, contributing to both national security and the city’s scientific standing.
  • High-Tech Industries: Beyond research institutes, Daejeon is a thriving center for high-tech industries, including IT, biotech, and renewable energy. These companies rely on Daejeon’s infrastructure for research and development, driving innovation and growth.

3-2. A City Full of Festivals and Events

Daejeon’s cultural scene is also growing, with a variety of festivals drawing in locals and tourists alike. Here are just a few of the key events that bring the city to life:

  • Daejeon 0:00 Festival (August 9–19, 2024): This summer festival includes a massive street parade, K-pop concerts, and innovative science exhibitions.
  • Daejeon Science Festival (October 18–20, 2024): A must-see event for anyone interested in the future of science and technology.
  • Daejeon Bread Festival (September 28–29, 2024): Bread lovers can indulge in treats from Daejeon’s top bakeries, including Sungsimdang.

Daejeon’s year-round festival calendar, which includes events like the Yuseong Festival and Donggu Dongrak Festival, ensures there’s always something happening in the city.

3-3. Rising Life Satisfaction in Daejeon

A 2023 survey from the Daejeon-Sejong Research Institute revealed that Daejeon residents are increasingly satisfied with life in the city:

  • Life Satisfaction: Residents’ life satisfaction scores rose from 53.9 in 2022 to 64.7 in 2023, reflecting growing happiness among locals.
  • Trust in Local Government: Trust in the city’s government also improved, rising by 7.7 points to 55.5 in 2023.
