My Friend's MCT Oil Obsession :)
I have this one friend who’s totally obsessed with MCT oil because he believes it helps improve cognitive function and prevent dementia. Seriously, every time he asks me how I’m doing, it’s, “Did you take your MCT oil today?” And whenever he says something ridiculous, I can’t help but tease, "Guess it’s time for you to take an extra shot of MCT!"

As for me, I first tried MCT oil in bulletproof coffee, but I couldn’t give up my 'coffee and bread' combo. So, now I just take a spoonful of MCT oil on an empty stomach every morning. No flavor, no smell—it’s pretty easy to take! I also heard that if you eat a lot of carbs, your body uses glucose first, which can reduce the effect of MCT oil. That’s why I take it at a different time than my carb-heavy meals. I’ll keep taking it and see if I actually get smarter. :D

What’s MCT Oil, Anyway?

You might be wondering, "What's MCT oil?" Well, MCT stands for Medium-Chain Triglycerides(중쇄지방산), which are fatty acids with 6 to 12 carbon atoms. Because they have shorter chains than regular fats, MCTs are digested quickly and used as an instant energy source. MCT oil is naturally found in coconut oil, palm oil, and some dairy products, and it’s become a go-to health supplement for everything from weight management to brain function.

MCT oil is colorless and odorless, so it doesn’t mess with the taste or smell of your food. That makes it super easy to add to coffee, smoothies, or salads. Want to know more about MCT oil? Let’s break it down, but remember: not every food is good for everyone, so make sure it’s right for you.

1. MCT Oil for Brain Health?

MCT oil is known for boosting ketone production, which is key for brain health. Here’s why. MCT oil is digested and converted into ketones almost immediately in the liver. Unlike regular fats, which take longer, MCTs enter the liver fast and help your body hit ketosis quickly. This means more ketones for your brain and muscles to use as energy, even if you’re not restricting carbs.

What Are Ketones?

Ketones are energy molecules produced by the body when it breaks down fats, usually when there’s a low intake of carbohydrates. Normally, our body uses carbohydrates and converts them into glucose, which is our primary energy source. However, when we follow a low-carb diet (like the ketogenic diet) or when we're fasting, the body runs low on glucose. At that point, it starts breaking down fat to produce ketones as an alternative energy source. This metabolic state is called ketosis.

Ketones and the Brain

The brain uses a lot of energy, and it typically relies on glucose to function. But when glucose is in short supply, the brain can also use ketones for fuel.

Research has shown several positive effects of ketones on brain function:

  • Energy efficiency: Ketones provide energy more efficiently than glucose, which can improve cognitive functions like memory and focus.
  • Neuroprotection: Ketones help protect brain cells and reduce oxidative stress, which can be particularly beneficial in conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease by helping maintain brain function.
  • Sustained energy: While glucose can be used up quickly after consumption, ketones provide a more steady energy source, preventing the brain from experiencing energy dips. This can improve concentration and memory over time.
  • ketone production - 케톤 생성
  • ketosis - 케토시스 (케톤 대사 상태)
  • restricting carbs - 탄수화물 제한
  • fasting - 단식
  • alternative energy source - 대체 에너지원
  • metabolic state - 대사 상태
  • cognitive functions - 인지 기능
  • neuroprotection - 신경 보호
  • oxidative stress - 산화 스트레스
  • energy dips - 에너지 저하

2. MCT Oil: Good for More Than Just Your Brain?

Weight management: Sounds too good to be true, right? Eating fat to lose weight? Actually, MCT oil is different from regular fat. Normally, long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) take a while to digest and can end up being stored as fat. MCT oil, on the other hand, is quickly converted into energy.

Some studies suggest that people who take MCT oil eat fewer calories compared to those who consume LCTs. When it comes to weight loss, it’s not just about calories—it’s about where your energy comes from. MCT oil provides fast, usable energy that can help with weight management. Knowing that might ease your worries about "spreading oil all over your diet."

Gut health and immunity: MCT oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to suppress bad bacteria in your gut while promoting good gut health. This can boost your immune system, which is more important than ever these days. You've probably heard the phrase "Gut health is the key to immunity," right? MCT oil supports this by fostering beneficial bacteria and keeping harmful ones in check, enhancing your overall immune defense.

  • weight management - 체중 관리
  • too good to be true - 너무 좋아서 믿기 어려운
  • long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) - 장쇄지방산
  • be stored as fat - 지방으로 저장되다
  • spread oil over your diet - 식단에 기름을 첨가하다
  • gut health - 장 건강
  • immunity - 면역력
  • antibacterial - 항균성의
  • anti-inflammatory - 항염증의
  • suppress - 억제하다
  • boost your immune system - 면역 체계를 강화하다
  • beneficial bacteria - 유익균

3. How to Get the Most Out of MCT Oil

When is the best time to take MCT oil for brain activation?

Typically, it’s most effective when taken in the morning.

Morning Focus: Taking MCT oil in the morning can improve mental clarity and concentration. The liver quickly converts MCTs into ketones, which the brain can efficiently use as an energy source.

Energy Boost: MCT oil provides an immediate energy boost when consumed in the morning, helping to kickstart the day with more vitality.

Synergy with Caffeine: Adding MCT oil to your morning coffee or tea can enhance the cognitive benefits of caffeine, resulting in a synergistic effect that boosts brain performance.

How should you take it?

Taking a spoonful of MCT oil on an empty stomach is a simple way to consume it. Since MCT oil doesn’t have a strong flavor, it can easily be added to various foods. Be mindful that consuming carbohydrates might reduce the effectiveness of MCT oil, as the body will prioritize using glucose. To maximize fat-burning and energy benefits, try consuming MCT oil separately from carb-heavy meals.

💡 Add to Smoothies: "Supercharge your morning smoothie!"
Enhance your smoothie’s nutrition by adding MCT oil for lasting energy without altering the taste.

💡 Salad Dressing: "Healthier salad, made even better!"
Use MCT oil in salad dressings for a healthy fat boost. Pair it with avocados or nuts for added benefits.

💡 With Yogurt: "Simple and tasty!"
Mix MCT oil into yogurt for a convenient and digestion-friendly way to consume it. Perfect for breakfast or a snack.

💡 In Coffee: "Bulletproof Coffee for the win!"
Mix MCT oil with butter in your coffee for a potent energy boost, especially if you’re using it as a meal replacement.

  • empty stomach - 공복
  • fat-burning - 지방 연소
  • energy-boosting - 에너지 증가
  • alter the flavor - 맛을 바꾸다
  • drizzle - (소량을) 뿌리다

I tried bulletproof coffee with butter and MCT oil, but the butter? Yeah, not for me... (Gave up right away).

4. Things to Watch Out for When Taking MCT Oil

MCT oil has lots of health benefits, but taking too much too soon can cause digestive issues like an upset stomach or diarrhea. It’s best to start with a small amount (about a teaspoon) and gradually increase it over time.

Also, eating a lot of carbs can reduce the effect of MCT oil because your body will use glucose first. So, if you want to maximize its fat-burning and energy-boosting benefits, try to limit your carb intake.

There’s also some research that suggests long-term use of MCT oil might raise cholesterol levels, so it’s important to balance your intake based on your overall health. As with anything, balance is key. MCT oil alone won’t solve all your problems, so make sure you’re combining it with other healthy habits.

5. How is MCT Oil Made?

MCT oil comes mainly from coconut oil or palm oil. These oils contain both MCTs and LCTs, but the MCTs are extracted through a process called fractional distillation. Here’s how it works:

  1. Source selection: The process starts with raw materials like coconut oil, which contains about 50-60% MCTs.
  2. Hydrolysis: The oils are broken down through a process called hydrolysis, which separates the triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids, including both MCTs and LCTs.
  3. Fractional distillation: By using the difference in boiling points, MCTs are separated from LCTs in this step. Since MCTs have a lower boiling point, they can be isolated.
  4. Purification: The MCTs are further purified to remove impurities and enhance quality.
  5. Final product: The purified MCTs are bottled or encapsulated and ready for consumption.
  • ready for consumption - 섭취 준비 완료

Is MCT Oil Right for You?

Thanks to its short carbon chain, MCT oil is quickly absorbed in the small intestine and transported directly to the liver for fast energy use. This makes it popular among athletes or those trying to lose weight. It’s also known for aiding brain function and boosting immune health.

But not all foods are right for everyone. Some people may experience side effects, especially if they consume too much too quickly. It’s always best to start small and see how your body responds. And of course, if you’re unsure, consult with a health expert before making MCT oil a regular part of your diet. Balance is everything!

  • short carbon chain - 짧은 탄소 사슬
  • small intestine - 소장
  • side effects - 부작용
  • balance is everything - 균형이 중요하다
